A home language beside English
· For parents
How to keep Hindi, Telugu or Kannada in the week when English runs school, and which languages Hey Minie does not cover.
Many Indian homes are already bilingual before anyone makes a plan. The risk is not English. The risk is that the other language becomes instructions only: come here, eat, hurry. A story puts that language back inside a plot the child can answer.
The languages this app can carry
English, Hindi, Telugu and Kannada. Not Tamil, Marathi, Malayalam, Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi or Urdu. If your language is missing, do not accept a neighbour language as a substitute. Use a person for the missing one. Use Hindi, Telugu or Kannada only when someone in the house speaks it too.
A week with two languages
- Give each language its own night. Mixing both into one session confuses a young child and exhausts you.
- One parent, one language is a method some families like. It fails if that parent is also doing English homework at the same hour. A story night is smaller and easier to keep.
- Do not correct every sound at bedtime. Repeat the phrase once and continue.
- Kurma can remind you which words appeared. It is your memory, not their report card.
Abroad, the school language is even stronger. The US, UK and UAE pages, and the essay on language abroad, are the next read. The guide is the short version.
