A bedtime routine that holds on a bad night

· For parents

The sequence to keep when dinner was late, someone is travelling, or a child stalls. A story with an ending is one step, not the whole night.

A routine fails on the night you invent it. Write the order once: wash, room, story, one question, device away. Say it the same way when you are tired. Hey Minie is the story step, in English, Hindi, Telugu or Kannada. It is not the wash, and it is not a promise they will fall asleep.

When they stall

At 4, the stall is water and 'again'. The same short story twice is still a story. A second feed is not. At 7, the stall is a sudden memory of homework. Write it down, do not open the book, return to the question. At 9, the stall is often another reel, or a real conversation. Have the real conversation. Name the reel as a delay and finish the story. Ages are spelled out on 3 to 5, 6 to 8 and 9 to 10.

When the clock moves

Shift work, a late train, summer light, a Friday weekend in the UAE, a dark British afternoon: keep the order and drop a step. Wash and story is a complete night. The routine guide is the calm version of this. The TV QR pairing helps if the fight is about who holds the phone.
